[27]***F-Zero delivers the excellent play control you've come to expect in a game from Mr. Miyamoto and his team at Nintendo. You can bank with the R Button and tip down your nose while making jumps. You'll need all the control you can get, too, as you roar through the twists and turns of F-Zero's 15 deviously difficult courses. There are four hover cars to choose from, each with its own strong points and weak points. Most beginners find the durability and handling of the Fire Stingray easiest to use (despite poor acceleration), but veteran players will often choose the more-balanced Blue Falcon.

Strategy plays a big part in this speedfest. In this one-player racing game you will need to find shortcuts, elude hazards and snag power-ups if you want to beat your savvy competition. Keep an eye...

[27]***During a vacation in Dinosaur Land, Princess Toadstool gets kidnapped and a spell is cast on the inhabitants of the island. When they stumble upon Yoshi, a young dinosaur, Mario and Luigi learn that Bowser is responsible for the terrible misdeeds. Now, all Yoshis are trapped in magical eggs that Bowser has hidden throughout seven castles. Many hidden paths aid Mario in making his way to Bowser's castle, completing 74 areas and finding all 96 exits. Discover items, including a feather that gives Mario a cape that allows him to fly, or a flower that shoots fireballs in layers upon layers of 2-D scrolling landscapes. Players can even ride Yoshi and swallow their enemies.***This is by far the best platform game ever created. Nothing ever came close to it, and is still greatly enjoyable.***A great, colorful game that vastly improved on the already popular Super Mario Bros. 3 and sold quite a number of Super NES bundles. With the addition of new moves like the spin jump, the new cape power-up (which takes the place of the raccoon tail from the previous game), and Yoshi, Mario's new dinosaur sidekick and transportation, there's plenty to explore here. The game world is vast and offers many hidden levels and multiple exits in most stages. This is Mario at the very top of his game.

ActRaiser  Enix (Quintet)1990

[29]***
[27]***Generations ago, the world fell into deep Chaos. The Master had maintained the world in a state of peace and harmony. However, an evil one called Tanzra began to threaten its very existence. People spent their lives manifesting their love to their Master while fearing The Evil One. The Master and The Evil One were eternal enemies. In strength and power they were almost equals. Even though the world has fallen into Chaos, somehow the earth continued on its revolving course.***ActRaiser is a single player mix of alternating overhead city-building simulation and side-scrolling platform action. The protagonist in the English version is 'The Master'. A deity who's been away for a while and returns to find his people have been lead astray and their civilization destroyed by the demon Tanzra, "The Evil One". The player is controls things as the Master descends from heaven on a cloud to observer the people and causes a stone statue to be possessed with his spirit. Using this this living statue armed with a sword, demons are slain and souls are freed. The sim mode begins with the creation of a male and female to tend a population center as the Master eliminates more demons and miraculously prepares the way for the people to build and multiply in their little corner of the world. In this view, and angel armed with a bow and arrow is directed against demons emerging from their layers to attack the people. Meanwhile, the people are directed to seal the layers and build where the master directs. At a certain point, the local demons and their leader will regroup to stop the progress. At this point the Master inhabits a statue to finish the job in action mode. This continues for 6 regions until one final standalone action stage completed.

The game's story is in fact a Judeo-Christian allegory; confirmed by the Japanese story of ActRaiser 2 where the protagonist and antagonist characters are revealed to be named God and Satan. No religion/faith tag yet applies to this game entry, however, because the religion of the game's creators is currently unknown to the uvl community (stay tuned). Even without the revelation of the true names of these characters, the allegory is pretty blatant. The Master descends and ascends to heaven, is accompanied by angel(s), creates life (beginning with a male and female), frees souls, performs miracles, destroys demons, creates order and peace out of chaos and strife, he cannot lose (though the player can), defeats the evil one, listens to and answers prayers, accepts offerings (which in turn benefit the people), casts false gods out of his temple, and is totally ignored by the people as soon as they perceive their problems have been eliminated and he loves them anyway.

Hint: Preforming better in the action mode will actually cause more demos to inhabit the lairs in the sim mode. This in turns leads to a higher population potential for the region.
The world map resembles North America
The English version was much easier than the original. But, upon beating the game, the Japanese difficulty level for the action mode is unlocked.
ActRaiser was provided for Wii's Virtual Console in 2007.
[Zerothis]***A masterpiece of game design originally released in the early days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System , ActRaiser's enduring popularity stems from its revolutionary combination of action- and simulation-based game play. The user plays the role of the Master, a dethroned deity whose once-idyllic world has fallen under the control of the Evil One. Stripped of godly power, the Master must somehow put an end to the Evil One's reign and rebuild his desolate realm. Game play alternates between two modes: Action and Simulation. In Action mode, the Master must battle against impossible odds to pacify six lands. Pacifying a land unlocks Simulation mode. In this mode, the Master must oversee the development and re population of the territory he has reclaimed. In doing so, he will gain followers who gradually restore his godly might, empowering him to take back the next land and, ultimately, defeat the Evil One.***Shame on you if you've never played Actraiser before! This version, other than having an amazingly badass logo, is actually a lot harder than the US release of the game. Even in Fillmore 1, there are more brambles, more monsters, more everything. It's crazy great. Ian Kelley wanted to retranslate the game, so here it is! Far be it from me to deprive one of my star translators from an awesome request or two!

RPM Racing  Interplay (Silicon & Synapse)1991Engines scream as the monster truck flies into the lead. All four racers spill over the dirt hill and slam onto the asphalt surface. Pushing past the pack in true dune buggy style, the Sandrail hits an ice patch and skids off the track. The Eurocar crashes through the open hole, but not before dropping off a few mines to slow down any slip-streamers.And the race has just begun!Interplay Productions introduces super high resolution graphics in a radical racing action game. Players zoom over asphalt, dirt and ice as they make their way through 24 levels of track difficulty--or they can build and save their own exciting track designs! And racers use their winnings to buy bigger and better equipment, or arm themselves with mines and oil slicks to sabotage the opposition. The challenge is on. It's machine vs. machine in the ultimate race for the checkered flag!***RPM Racing was preceded by Rareware's RC Pro-Am in 1988 and Electronic Art's Racing Destruction Set in 1985. With the later being the larger influence. It is a precursor to Rock 'n Roll Racing, which was done by the same developer.
Combat, obstacles, and traction on the non-flat tracks play a significant roll. There are 3 vehicle types to choose from that preform differently on pavement, dirt, ice, flat or bumpy tracks. Cars can be armed with oil, nitro, and mines. Additionally, there are 3 levels of tires, engines, shocks, and armor.
There are full race season, single race, and custom track modes. In addition to 4 game save slots, there are 6 custom tacks save slots. 1 or 2 players may compete on the split screen in any mode. In 1 player games, the 2nd player is replaced with one of 8 AI opponents who are each associated with their own vehicle.
In season mode, each track has an entrance fee and cash prize for placing 1st; often lesser cash prizes for lesser placements are also awarded. For an additional fee, racers can opt to move to a higher racing class (levels) where fees and prizes are bigger. Each class has its own set of tracks that the player may choose from. No track is mandatory or unavailable within a class. The player also has the option of going back to a lower class for free, which may become necessary if funds are eaten up be fees without winning prizes. However, going up always incurs a fee, even if the player has been there before. Beating the game requires making it to level 24 then paying 30,000,000 for one last level up. This triggers the end sequence as there is no 25th level, but the player may continue racing the 30 million dollar party. Of note, the player may leave any game mode at anytime between races without penalty, the current game is automatically saved at the conclusion of each race.

[b]Track Editor[/b]:
Custom track designing is not intuitive but fairly easy to learn. Players can set the track's laps, gravity, and starting line type. Each track section can be pavement, dirt, or ice. Track sections are laid out like puzzle pieces on a 2D non-isometric grid (Pipe-Mania style). Sections include horizontal and vertical straights, four standard 90° turns, eight T-sections for diverging and converging multiple paths in any direction, and a criss-cross. Either a horizontal or vertical special straight section is used as the starting grid. The staring grid can be oriented forward, reversed, face-off with player 1 forward, or face-off with player 1 reversed. 7 points are used to adjust the 6 slops in straight sections to 5 different heights. Slopes can be flat (0:1), inclined (1:1), or steep (2:1). Non-straight sections can only be adjusted for height for the entire section at once. An isometric view of individual sections is provided to help to orient the section's design to the adjacent sections. If the edge of a section does not match the height of the adjacent section(s), the player is warned immediately but may proceed without correcting the error immediately. But such error must be eliminated before the track can be saved. Also required for a track to be saved is no dead ends, and a starting grid section. The track verification is surprisingly liberal, even allowing diverging and converging paths that are against the flow of traffic (like turning around and going the wrong way up a freeware merging lane). The AI opponents are generally no able to discern the fastest or shortest route and can even be diverted into a path with no natural exit. Or with very clever path designs, valid lap paths can be entirely different for player 1, player 2, and AI players; which can lead to interesting traffic patterns.

Upon its release on the SNES, a whole new segment of gamers was exposed to its complex yet addicting gameplay that PC gamers were already hooked on. For this reason, my rating was higher than I'm inclined to rate it now. But, when I think back. And yes, I did rated [game=#7790]FF[/game] higher, [i]and[/] claim this game is better. That's because [game=#7790]FF[/game] is so much better than its contemporaries.

Someday I hope to play the real [game=#6369]Final Fantasy IV[/game].***
[29]***Note that Easytype was actually made from the untranslated US template and is [i]much[/i] easier than the actual US version. There's apparently a misconception that the US version was made from the Easytype instead.***Only version of Final Fantasy 4 officially released in the United States. This was actually a translation of the 'toned down' version made for kids in Japan. This was to make the game easer for children. It lacked most of the features in the original version- including many weapons, items, and a special item, the 'Porno Mag,' which couldn't actually be viewed.
[anonymous]***Actually Final Fantasy IV toned down and renamed for American players, this is the first installment of the Final Fantasy series for SNES. Not much really stands out in my mind about this game, it's average compared to others. The down side of this game, to me as a gamer, was not only the fact they tried to conceal the absence of the other two NES games by changing the number, but that we received the 'easytype' of the game. Many still consider this game a classic, arguably the best of the series. I've not personally finished the hard type yet, but Final Fantasy V was much nicer, in my opinion.
FFIV is still one of the best rpgs for the snes. It's plot is one of the most well thought up of any rpg.

Nasir will grow into a man as he tries to restore pure water to Lakeland in LAGOON.***
[32]***This game is the hands-down champion if anyone ever asks "Hey, can you name a game that's REALLY fun to play, despite the fact that the main character looks like a stupid Lego-Man with a hole in his head and the plot is almost non-existant?"...

Let's start at the beginning. Want to hear the plot? *Begin sarcasm* OK, but be warned, it's so clever and chilling, you'll either be getting nightmares about it, or you won't because you can't sleep as you'll be up all night pondering it! *End sarcasm* The Kingdom (I think it's called Lakeland) is in trouble. Demons have appeared, and the water suddenly becomes muddy!! OH NO!! What are we going to do? Call NASIR, the Champion of Light! He'll be sure to save the day by calling the Exorcist and ordering a Brita purifier! ...Well, that would be the obvious choice of what I'D do, but just to make this game long, you get to wander all around Lakeland killing monsters, and finding the evil force behind the pollution and defeating him, thus restoring peace (and purified water) to the land.

Based on that description, you'd think I'd give it a 1, right? WRONG!! When you factor in the Gameplay, that's so fun it brings it up to the 9 I gave it. You don't know why you play the game with the stupid-looking hero and the ridiculous so-called "plot"...but you do...and you get addicted...and it's...it's...FUN!! To make it sound A LOT simpler than it is, picture Zelda only you can jump, and it's a lot more fun than that. Erm...just play it and you'll see.

[27]***A Link to the Past (LTP throughout) was a ground-breaking game for the Zelda series. Besides being the first Zelda for the SNES, it was the first to have a semi fleshed-out plot. By semi fleshed-out, I mean something more than collect crystals and kill Ganon. Instead, it had a retrieve 3 pendants, collect the 'Master Sword,' kill Agahnim, _then_ collect crystals and [spoiler]kill Ganon (revealed to be Agahnim's alter-ego).[/spoiler]
Despite my sarcasm, I actually enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) this game having beaten it at least 15 times and I still keep coming back for more. The wonderfully engaging plot (mentioned above) actually takes place *before* the first 2 Zeldas, and so is technically a prequel. The game-play departs from the Zelda 2 RPG style, and returns to it's roots as a top-view adventure game with RPG elements. Unlike the first Zelda, communication plays a fairly important role in this installment. There are friendly, non-cavedwelling NPC's that you can, indeed are required, to get information from. Some play an important role, some are there just to annoy the living shnike out of you. Fighting is still basicly the same as in the original, as is the heart and money system. However, the overworld/dungeon system has changed drastically with the addition of an in-game map that actually shows important locations. i.e. Where you are, where you need to go, and enough detail to make getting there possible.***The Zelda Link to the Past [[link:http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/170/ Master Quest]] hack has brand new dungeons, overworlds, music, etc.

SimEarth  Imagineer;FCI (Tomcat System)1991A conversion (port?) of the computer game. Nearly all original features are intact. Guide the development of a planet and the lifeforms of it from primordial beginnings to the development and exodus of multiple intelligent species. In addition to sandbox like 'random world', all the scenarios from the computer version are present. Random World, Civilization, Industrialized Civilization, Space Exodus, Mars, Venus, Ice World, Dinosaur Civilization, Daisyworld (Gaia Hypothesis), and New Earth. The New Earth scenarios takes a slightly different turn than other versions however. In this version, you must first eliminate a robot civilizational. The language is really dumbed down so that it actually no longer makes any sense the way it is applied to the elements of the game. For instance, calling the Mollusk lifeforms "Octopus". Well at least they didn't rename Insects to "Bee". But because of this, the bit of educational value associated with other versions is not just rendered null, its full of false information.

A large number of reviews claim there is no 'game' in this game. They are referring to the game's various open-ended modes play. These reviews ignore the scenarios mode with three levels of difficulty. Each mode has win conditions and loss conditions. The SNES scenarios are the same conditions yet more difficult to complete than the computer versions to.

Tags:
It is censored. Surprisingly, much of the language that suggested a belief in evolution has been removed from this version. Despite the game's premise depending on many aspects of the theory. For instance new lifeforms do not "evolve" in this game, rather they are "born".

Their whereabouts are unknown.***Game description taken from Peter Karsanow's walkthrough ([[link:http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/arcana.txt]])

Arcana is a non-real-time RPG. Movement occurs in steps or turns, and combat also occurs in phases. No arcade action, or running and jumping here. The graphics are reasonable, but minimally animated. Sound is good. Story suffers the old translation blues, and there are annoying jumps, but almost no spelling errors. This is the only RPG I've ever seen with a first-person point of view that generates graphics for 45 degrees in each 90 degree turn, so it doesn't look so abrupt!

Apparently, this game was butchered during the translation. It is said that there are many differences between the Japanese (Card Master) and American (Arcana) versions--graphics, script, names, gameplay... I guess just about everything. Oh, and many things were deleted from the American version as well.

And let's not forget how you could pick up and use various weapons to knock out the other racers, and that they could do that to you, too!
The two-player battle mode, in which players try to knock each other's balloons off, is probably the single best two-player game ever made. Mario Kart also has excellent play control and high speed Mode 7 graphics.

Dragon Quest: The Hand of the Heavenly Bride  Chunsoft (Enix)1992A fantastic game, perhaps not the best in the series on SNES, but definitely a must-play classic.
A simple masterpiece.

I find it curious that there are people who vote for it with a grade 3, or lower, and so few have played or finished it.***[media=youtube]bIWvEFPdEmM[/media]***
[30]***The Japanese subtitle literally means "Hand of Heaven". Titled Dragon Quest: The Hand of the Heavenly Bride in Europe.
[Zerothis]***Two unofficial English translations available for this one. The first patch was done by [[link:http://www.dejap.com/ DeJap]] and [[link:http://pt.parodius.com/ Partial Translations]]. The second patch was done by [[link:http://byuu.cinnamonpirate.com/ byuu]]. byuu's translation is a bit more literal, but both patches are very well-done, so take your pick.

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest  Square1992Think you can save the world?
Here's your chance to play the world's first role-playing game for the entry-level player.
The planet is dying. Cold winds blow. Fires rage. Trees are withering. In other words, it's brutal out there.
Only you can stop the Dark King from consuming the light from the Crystals of Earth. But don't think it'll be a walk in the park. You're up against the sleaziest of slimebags, the evilest of ecto-scum - we're talking serious monsters here.
This isn't your basic shoot-'em-to-smithereens kiddy game, either. You'll have to think your way out of some tough spots. Think you can handle that?***European version

[27]***This beginer level RPG is good for children, but if you're a fan of the Final Fantasy series I would reccomend staying away from this one. There is little challenge in this game.

Final Fantasy V  Square1992continuing with the excellent standards Final Fantasy players all know, Final Fantasy V was, in my oppinion, the peak of the series. It's class system allowed players to choose what they wanted their characters to be in the middle of the game, gaining skills for the class until it is mastered and then moving on to another. Although the class system was made even better for final fantasy tactics, FFV is still a good preview of what FFT has to offer. A gripping story that spans two worlds that were once one, good graphics and music, and great gameplay make this one of the best RPG's made. unfortunately Square/Nintendo never brought Final Fantasy V to america, but it is soon to be re-released here in the Final Fantasy Anthology.***Unofficial English translation:

By using the "Book of Life" feature, you have the ability to create and save up to 50 of your favorite creatures! Travel back in time and see if you can reach the mythical land of Eden in E.V.O.: Search for Eden.***Apparently the Japanese title translates to something like: 4.6 billion year tale.***Somehow, humans evolved from Cabbits.
